in immersive theatre, the immersiveness comes from the experiences of not seeing anyone, of losing the knowledge that you are an audience member. different from proscenium theatre, immersive theatre (where the audience has mobility) allows the audience to be alone, to have space and darkness. this structure creates the moment to separate from the bigger group, providing autonomy of the audience’s journey process, creating the dynamics of being an individual and being able to lose oneself in the audience group. the audience’s autonomy of free exploration allows one to get in the mindset of being immersed.

immersiveness

question of belief and engagement

religious ceremony or something religious inside the theatre allows full engagement for no engagement at all. you don’t have to believe in the ritual nor take on the religious context for it to be transformative.

restricted areas

while theatrical areas that are closed to the audience can add incentives for some audiences to explore, but set designers often fail to plan for the possibilities and dangers of audiences going off-script to explore during performances. the desire to explore restricted areas is not the audience’s failure of engaging with the performance, but an enhancement to the overall experience for immersive theater.
